3.2.11. The pumping-up fuel pump

GENERAL INFORMATION

The pumping-up pump is established in a fuel tank and attached to the fuel level sensor. To remove the pump, to take out from a tank the fuel level sensor (see subitem 1–5 subsections 3.1.7) and then to remove from it the pump.

Before removing the pump, to make the following:

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. To check, whether there are no breaks in electricity cables. To take out a trunk floor rug, to uncover the hatch in a floor for access to the fuel level sensor. To remove from the sensor a connecting block and to check, whether there is a crossing point between contacts central and lateral brown wires.
2. To check the pump fuse in the block of safety locks and the relay, No. 5 for release Golf cars to 07.1989 g and Jetta to 12.1988 g, No. 18 for release Golf cars from 08.1989 g and release Jetta from 01.1989 g.
3. To check the relay of the fuel pump (relay number see subsection 12.1). For this purpose to disconnect a block with wires from the Hall sensor on the ignition distributor. To take out from the block of the relay and safety locks of the relay of the fuel pump. The voltmeter to check tension between contacts No. 2 and "massy", No. 2 and 1, No. 4 and 1, No. 5 and 1 of the block of the relay and safety locks (see fig. The block of the relay and safety locks on release models from 08.1989 g). In each case the voltmeter should show tension of the storage battery.
4. To connect to "weight" for some seconds the central contact of a connecting block to the fuel level sensor. If thus tension does not fall, to check the control unit ignition; if tension falls, to replace the relay of the fuel pump. If after relay replacement tension falls, to check the sensor of the Hall of the distributor of ignition.
